This is the second coworking space of Haos, located in Belgrade’s Silosi port district in a reconstructed mid-20th century office building. The surrounding area, formerly an industrial zone, is now transforming into a significant creative, entertainment, and sports cluster with office spaces. The coworking space occupies part of the first floor, offering views of the former port elevators and grain silos, which now house various exhibition spaces.
The entire complex, built in the style of post-war Yugoslav Modernism — Brutalist architecture, became a crucial foundation for our design. It was important for us to make the coworking space interior an integral part, organically integrated into the surrounding environment. The Brutalist architecture and interior design solutions of that period became the basis for building the design. We used laconic volumes, moved away from decoration without function, used a color palette typical of that time, and some vintage interior elements of that time.
Another important element was the use of national Serbian patterns from kilims, as well as a type of art important for modern Serbia — murals. A wall with a view was chosen for the mural in the large lounge area. The artist painted a mural inspired by national Serbian carpet patterns.
This base was overlaid by the very concept of the Haos coworking space.
It is a warm space for people where they can feel cozy and at home. This is not a cold office, but a truly welcoming place where it is pleasant to be, meet and communicate with people. The implementation of these ideas resulted in a layout that creates a unifying space. The central element was a terracotta-colored core containing the reception, individual phone booths, an open kitchen, and spaces of the restaurant adjacent to the coworking space.
The coworking space has a reception area, made individually for the project and being a laconic volume, referring us to the Brutalist sculptural forms. An open-space area with individual workstations, a designated hot desk zone, bookshelves, and lounge chairs. An area of individual offices for 6-12 people, connected to the corridor by glass partitions.
A dining area connecting the two halves of the coworking space and located near the restaurant. On one side of the corridor, there is a kitchen — a niche connected to the restaurant bar by a common countertop, on the other side of the corridor — niches with tables. An area of large individual offices, separated from the main space by a green corridor, in which individual phone booths are painted in the color of the corridor.
And, finally, there is a large lounge area with a meeting room behind glass, with sofas and armchairs. An important element of the space — the mural occupies the entire large wall of the lounge area. This zone can be transformed if necessary into a common hall with the restaurant for holding large events using a sliding glass partition.
