The workspace of the future no longer looks like a business centre, not as a residential area and not as a shopping area.

After analyzing the principles and trends in the development of Kazan, I found that such an art form as cinema is a resurgent part of the cultural life of the city. Short films and music videos are filmed in Tatarstan, which receives awards and recognition all over the world. At the same time, there is no single film cluster for young filmmakers in the city. The existing film company «Tatarkino» is located at a distance from the city in a completely uninspiring atmosphere. Therefore, I propose to build a space that can become an impetus for the development and maintenance of youth cinema in Tatarstan. The amphitheatre area is separated from the road by a green strip with tall trees and lighting.

Site planning

The site is located in the historic centre, within walking distance from iconic sights, as well as on the axis of communication between the centre and the embankment of the Volga River. This unlocks the site's potential as a magnet for residents and residents of the complex.

The development zone borders the historically formed Central Market of Kazan. The project provides for a direct pedestrian connection along the axis of the second exit of the market and Galiaskara Kamala Street at the level of the sidewalk (in the project -1.500 mm.).

Workspace of the future

strengthens and develops creative thinking, imagination and new ideas of a man, as everything else is done by machines. It can quickly transform and change usage scenarios.


Show the user architectural flexibility, which means developing flexibility in it. The architecture of such spaces must be as humane as possible, not oppressive, one can say in the middle of the site is divided into 2 main parts for development. 

In the part of the site to the right of the axis of the pedestrian connection, there is the entire existing shopping and entertainment complex, the project provides for its preservation with some changes in terms of floor levels, as well as with the complete dismantling of part of the volume, which is made in a modern style with corner elements and a large percentage of glazing along Galiaskara Kamala street. This volume is dissonant with the historical development of the Tatar settlement, and also prevents the creation of an open quarter to attract people. Thus, the project provides for the visual division of the historical volume into a separate readable block at the intersection of Moskovskaya and Galiaskara Kamala streets.

Entrance to the parking is carried out from the existing passage from the street. Moscow towards the market.

Facades on the street. Galiaskara Kamala (in axes 4-10) are formed by cylindrical brick elements and showcases with a pitch of 1200 mm. This is the window spacing on the existing building, which is located on the right (in the axes 16'-2') on the site. The repetition of the vertical articulation of facades visually connects the new and old. The brick was chosen based on historical materials, which show the former buildings on the street. Galiaskara Kamala were made of brick. This technique, as a memory of a place, returns its historical material to the street. Active cylindrical forms are used as a response to the minaret of the mosque, which is located in the Volumetric-spatial composition of the complex.

Oval space in the centre of the plot (in the axes 7-16 / E-W) - the heart of the project. The amphitheatre and the passage to the market (in axes 10-11) are divided by red paving (architectural concrete with crumb terracotta). At the level of the 3rd floor, repeating the shape of an oval the bridge is located. The bridge connects all the buildings on the site, which is a walking area for workers and can play the role of a 360-degree platform. On the left (along axis 7) the bridge connects the end of the quarter and is a historical monument. 

The oval ring crowns the red balloon (above the amphitheatre), which is not a subject of capital construction, and therefore can be located above 17 meters, thereby attracting citizens to the complex. Inspired by the architecture of Kazan, including modern, we have identified elements of postmodern architecture. For example, a huge ring at the entrance to the shopping centre building, pyramids, exaggerated trees at the gate, and so on. Conceptually, new construction should respectfully relate not only to the historical context but also to the modern context, which may soon become historical. Such layers of eras are the traditional regional architecture that creates the individual look of the city. Therefore, the bridge has the shape of a huge oval, and the ball is a bright dominant, but due to transparency, it dissolves in the environment.

On the terrace of the building (in axes 3-10/A-Zh), there are mobile modules – “cabinets for introverts”. Offices are designed for solitary and focused work and can be rented for a certain period. Cabinets are made from easily prefabricated structures, inside there are wheels that allow you to move the modules, thus creating an always different and unique composition at the level of the 3rd floor.

Functional zoning

On the first and part -1 of the level of the existing building, there are shops. On the ground floor of a new building on Galiaska Street

Kamala is also located in trade and urban services (studio, dry cleaning, clothing repair, and so on). And also sports a hall available for both citizens and residents of the complex.

Cars are stored in an underground car park.

Cafes and restaurants are located in the amphitheatre area, creating a space located on three levels. The entrance to the parking lot is the «Dining Garden». On the facades facing the market, they are located at the expense of an auto lift, and internal passage at the expense of around the ramp. 

The offices are located on the second level of the existing building and are co-working spaces for young filmmakers. The co-working space is distributed to the new building, thus linking the new and the old. In the same zone, there are meeting rooms that can be rented for a while, they are located inside the courtyard well. On the 2nd floor of the new building (in axes 3-10/A-M), there are offices and apartments for temporary housing. The apartments face a quiet, green part of the quarter to the southwest. For film production, the residential function is important in almost any project, since the project team is often international, it is necessary to conduct tests with actors from different countries and cities. Housing on the territory of the cluster will be a big plus when choosing a space for work.

This conceptual design meets all the requirements of the Technical task, as well as the requirements of the historical and urban historical context of the city of Kazan. Project important visual connections are built that correspond to the program's territorial development of the city. The project has its architecture local language, inspires and promotes the development of creative human thinking!
