Loka Yoga & Café is a space created for care, wellbeing and community, integrated into the urban life of Vienna. Within total of 170sqm, functional zoning integrates yoga studio with separate male and female locker room, café area with bar, kitchen and community sitting area, as well as retail corner. Two facades are glass and completely open facing the street corner on the ground floor, it is completely transparent, light and welcoming to both regular guests and curious visitors from the street.

Concept and function

Main idea behind Loka is about vibration, light and clarity – qualities that come from within us and move through our bodies, reflected in both yoga practice and everyday rituals, smallest gestures and connections between people. Inspired by the clients vision of wellbeing, we created the space that resonates fully with these values – feeling the vibrations, light and clarity from the space itself.

The functional layout was imagined as a continuous flow rather than a series of separate zones, allowing movement to unfold naturally. Within this continuity, it supports two simultaneous experiences — a yoga practice comfortable for up to 30 people and a café with a community area. Large table and window benches invite conversation, sharing of experiences, but also leave room for quiet moments — reading, resting, or enjoying a coffee.

Textures and colors

Imperative was to create a tactile space, that can be felt with all the senses.

Natural, organic materials invite touch beyond visual sensation, while scent and sound contribute to an overall feeling of belonging — naturally, just as you are. Textures and materials were chosen very carefully, by looking and touching many samples of materials, trying out perfect shades of color and levels of texture, feeling how they belong in space and what associations come from that particular material. Textured plaster for the walls was chosen to bring depth and warmth with a slightly rough surface — like gentle traces of everyday life. Warm oak was used for furniture elements, also reflecting this raw natural feel. The raw, tactile quality is balanced with clarity and precision, enhanced by reflective elements like mirrors, inox, and glossy tiles. Linen and blackout curtains create a sense of lightness and let the light come in, while providing a sense of privacy.

Color palette is built from fresh, vibrant colors that come from nature and evoke a sense of vitality. Warm grays create a neutral base and bring the light in, olive green grounds the space in combination with the warm wood, and bright yellow and lime green inspire and refresh.

Lights and reflections

Light is used as an active actor in this space and main character in creating vibrations by reflecting on surfaces – mirrors, glass blocks and shiny tiles. An interplay of light and shadows, translucency and blurred visions are generated throughout space. The continuous light tube on the ceiling unifies the concept — tracing movement and flow of people and serving as a primary light source and therefore the source of reflections and playfulness.
